Hello everyone,
My name is Galit Stein and I am from Canada. I have been teaching English in Asia (Japan and Sout hKorea) for over six years. The first time I came to Asia was in 1997, to visit my sister who was working at the time in South Korea. I stayed with her for a few months, and I really enjoyed my time there. Of course I experienced some culture shock, but there was also a lot curiosity and admiration. I decided that once I graduated from university, I would follow in my sister's footsteps and become an English teacher. And thus, in 2001 I came to Japan for the first time. I immediately fell inlove with Tokyo. There was so much to see, eat, and experience. I felt like a kid in a candy store. I knew then that Japan was a place I wanted to stay for a long time. Since 2001, I've visited many places in Japan, but there are still so many more I want to go to, like Hokkaido and Okinawa. And I also want to see a Kabuki play, and try my hand at ikebana. Actually there is not enough space to write all of the things I want to do, but suffice it to say, I'm going to try to immerse myself and learn as much about Japanese culture, as possible.

インタビュー

─Where are you from?(どこの国から来ましたか?)

I was born in Israel, but my family moved to Canada when I was three years old. My family currently lives in Mississauga, Ontario, Canada. The city is average in size, about a million residents, and its part of the greater Toronto area. On weekends, when I was a university student, I often went to Toronto with my friends because the nightlife was great.

─What are your hobbies?(趣味は?)

walking, cycling, going to the movies, museums and art galleries, yoga (especially hot yoga), singing and dancing, traveling, dining out and going to coffee shops. Im also interested in history, buddhism and natural medicine.

─How has living in Japan been?(日本で、どんな生活体験をしていますか?)

I like living in Japan. The weather in Japan is very mild compared to Canada, so I can do lots of outdooor activities throughout the year. I really like the fact that most Japanese people ride bicycles. When I ride my bicycle I feel like a little kid again. Of course Japan is quite expensive, but there is so much to see and do here, I'm never bored.

─Which places have you visited in Japan, and which was your favorite?(日本の中でどこに行きましたか、またどの場所が一番好きですか?)

I have been to Tokyo, Osaka, Nagoya, Fukuoka, Nikko, Enoshima and Kamakura. My favorite place is Enoshima. I saw the most incredible sunset when I went there

─What are some memorable moments in Japan?(日本で、どんなことが心に残っていますか?)

Climbing mount Fuji was a great experience. The view from the top was incredible.
Eating Sushi at a Kaiten Zushi for the first time
Going to a Sumo match in Tokyo
Trying on my first kimono
Going to senso ji in Tokyo on new year's day
Going to the Imperial Palace
Admiring the beauty of Nagoya castle

─What is your personal message to everyone?(皆様へのメッセージ)

I believe that we should always keep an open mind and an open heart. The one thing I discovered while traveling around the world is that all people are good, and we are all the same. No matter where we come from, what religion we practice or what we do for a living, we are all the same.
